- 2001 Aia Vecchia Lagone Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (7/19/2007)
The color is still primary and inky with little sign of age. Despite the lack of age in the color, the Lagone has aged nicely. Aromas of cocoa, coffee and dark fruits burst room the glass. The fruit is gaining complexity and the palate is quite rich and gratifying showing bitter dark chocolate, dark fruits, plum, dark roasted coffee and a touch of tobacco. There is barely any tannin left and the oak is pretty much completely resolved. The midpalate is full and rich and carries through to a satisfying finish. Some acidity left but structurally, this wine is not going to last many more years. The wine, in my best guestamite, is at peak. Drink up. Thanks to Jon R. You definitely got this one right. A few years of cellaring was essential for this wine to shed some fat and tannin and allow the wood to integrate. Of course, my last bottle of '01. I'm looking forward to trying my stash of ’04.
Enjoyed this wine at Pizzeria Mozza last week. It went perfectly with the food.
