Here is a new 2nd hand blind tasting forumites!!!!!

Just in case you have not played along before, you have to try and guess the wine!! Country, region, varietals and so on. Vintage not important this time around, it`s a `05!! So lets give it a shot, there will be a few clues of course.

Purchased for $16 Cdn, 13% alc, total acidity: 5.61g/l. Bright yellow composite cork, coordinates with the lovely green yellow label!! Very modern looking I`d say. This white wine from the old world is a blend of 3 grape varietals and went very well with a baked salmon served with a rich roasted red pepper coulee.

Color. A pale yellow green, some bubbles at base of my glass. Looks very inviting.

Nose. Has a slight musky nuance on the nose. Floral tones include acacia and roses but as it airs I get some apple, tropical fruit and hint of citrus. Has that sea-shore freshness one might associate with Muscadet?

Palate. Initial mouthfeel entry thoughts are soft, round ripe, crisp and refreshing. I like the freshness of these 3 varietals with the developing lycee, grapefruit (no SB here) and limey tones. Whats this musky taste though?...oh, papaya!!
Neat wine which held up very well overnight, some added minerally notes but still quite tropical. Very refreshing after a 30 degree day and now, as I write, an amazing thunderstrom!

Good luck, it`s 9pm MT monday and I will be around for most of tuesday to help you all along.

Hey Bob.

I have no idea what you have opened, however, I will hazard a guess as to the country of origin. How about Italy?

Very good Bruce. Over on the UK forum they were all over the place at first!
So where do we go from here??

Clue One of the grape varietals featured in the title of a wine book.

I was guessing Italian too. It sounded like a white Lambrusco, but I couldn't get my head around that.

I assume all the grapes are native to Italy? No French grapes?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows

JR...good to see you here. Correct, Italian varietals. If you find the area where this wine comes from...... !!

KS...good try but wrong, think location! Remember my hint about sea shore.

Oops, the falanghina is a single varietal and not a blend I think. Never mind.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Iesi! Verdicchio, mostly, with Malvasia and Trebbiano. Coastal, from Marche, and with any luck, you didn't get the fish bottle. ;)

Makes sense to me!

Nope, no fish bottle but fishing abounds in this area..and swimming, boating. The whole place is surrounded by water.

Like K, I first thought of Sicily, but your description doesn't sound like any Sicilian wine I'm familiar with. (NB: Sicily is probably the part of Italy and Italian wine I know least well.)

As an alternative guess, how about Sardinia? Vermentino di Sardegna can have up to 15 percent other white grapes ...

My guess: A Chardonnay / Insolia / Grecanico blend from Sicily. Insolia is sometimes spelled "Inzolia," which could account for Bob's zzz clues.

Thats close enough.......Winner!!!!

The wine is the `05 Donnafugata Lighea, Sicily and is a blend of Zibibbo, Ansonica and Catarratta.
Did you all get my clues? The book one referred to "Brunello to Zibibbo" written by Nicolas Belfrage. Tough wine to guess, I agree. The guys over in the UK did not do too well either!

OK, now that I've won...what are the "rules" for this game?? Are we allowed to use the internet to help search, or are we supposed to go strictly from personal experience/memory? 'Cause if it's the latter, then I cheated

LOL. I guess when the wine is as tough as this one, a little bit of searching will assist in the final decision (cough). The memory sometimes needs some jogging, diplomacy is my middle name, so whatever it takes.
Needless to say, many prefer personal experience (wink). Think however the new rule is that winner has to do the next blinder, so lets get to it KS.
