WTN: Trivento Syrah Reserve 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Jul 23, 2007 5:38 pm

Mendoza. Concha y Toro's wine investment in Argentina.

Dark red in the glass.

Smoky, tangy, chocolate, with some alcohol burn on the nose.

Very tangy, jammy black cherry, crisp red apple, shrill, with a fairly strong wallop of alcohol present. If one can ignore the alcohol roughness, the wine is rather rich and intense, but, oh, that alcohol.

With time, the wine became rounder and slightly softer, but couldn't shake the obvious alcohol which dectracted from the whole impression.

Dry and tart on the mouthwatering (and not in a good way) finish.

Purchased at $12.95 (Canadian).

Sorry to hear you weren't impressed with it. Some of Concha y Toro's wines are great for the money. This one doesn't sound so good.

Do you know what the alcohol level was? (Not that it matters, given that it sound like it didn't carry it well.)

It was 14 per cent, Mike. I should note that I have, in the past, greatly enjoyed the Malbec from Trivento, so I am not prepared to totally write off this winery.

Bruce, maybe it was an off bottle? Im not a great fan of Trivento (I dont sell their products), but I will say that they are known for consistent quality products. They have a decent reserve Cab/Malbec blend that is good QPR.
