WTN: 2002 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese*

by JC (NC) » Mon Jul 23, 2007 5:36 pm

A.P. Nr. 2 602 041 007 03 Opened 07/20/2007

7.5% alcohol !
Pale gold color. Petillant or slightly spritzig when first poured.
(I experienced a messy extraction of the cork which was crumbling but kept most of the small particles out of the glass.)
Wonderful Riesling nose of stone fruits and floral elements. On the palate I perceived white peach or nectarine and peach nectar, a bit of lemon sorbet, and a suggestion of the little yellow wildflowers I used to nibble from my backyard in the springtime as a child. Thrilling in the mouth; lingering finish to savor.
Can definitely be sipped on its own, but also suggests to me a pairing with fresh peach or nectarine or obsttorte. So luscious I can't imagine having the will power to let it age. If this is "one-star" quality, what is the "two-star" like?

So this was a real cork?

Many of the 2002 JJ Christoffels were shipped with fake corks.

Sounds nice, JC. I especially like your wildflower image - very evocative.

I tend to appreciate the description of spatlese and auslese rieslings more than I actually appreciate the wines, they are just a bit too sweet for me. Granted, I haven't had many...

With the proper acidity, the sweetness is subtle. I like the way the best German Rieslings balance the taste elements. I usually don't find them cloying until you get to the Beerenauslese level.

Only QbA and Kabinett had fake cork.
