Thnaks for the post. I actually tried this wine (poured by one of the owners at a Berkeley (Albany to be precise) wine shop) I liked it quite a bit-the combination of Pinotage and Pinot Noir added some power and complexity to their 2004 Pinot.

The most surprising thing about that wine is its price tag. $34 a bottle for California Pinotage? I don't think so ...

I'd say that if it's as well made as a similarly priced Cali Cab, they why not?

Having said that, I don't know if it'd like it as much as SA Pinotage, since I can't be sure that a Californian example has all the smoky Lapsang-Souchong leatheriness that I love in the SA versions.

She says, "You'll be hard-pressed to find commercial plantings of Pinotage outside of South Africa."
I say, she should do a little more homework.

And why not $34 for Pinotage? It's artisan. It's unique for the area. And if it's well made and delivers taste value, I'm with Paul on this one.

Single vineyard estate California wine? - price seems to be in the same range as other similar boutique California wines - this is not some African wild-animal named cheapo shippers brand from SA.

Fort Ross has been getting some great reviews for their Pinotage, Alder Yarrow of Vinography tasted and rated 193 wines at San Francisico's annual Pinot Days festival of Pinot Noir, and put Fort Ross Pinotage in his top 8.

Perhaps you should taste it.
