So what are we opening this weekend?

The weekend is finally here so which wine is on the possible agenda? Pretty busy weekend up here with the Grand Prix but think shellfish and Pepiere Muscadet.

Probably a Majestik blend of Syrah and Kalecik Karasi from Turkey and some sweet Pinotage!

In this heatwave, beer.

And possibly a sparkler.

WTN: Tonight a Turkish delight (and I don't mean Leyla Gencer this time) and a Pinotage.

• 2002 Laborie Estate Wine Pineau de Laborie - South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl (7/20/2007)
  17,5% and fortified with Pinotage. A nose of mustard and cumin - it sure smells ... sorry, stinks ... like Pinotage! The palate is sweet and full bodied but the alcohol doesn't stick out. If you don't mind some funk, this is a fun little dessert!
• 2006 Sevilen Majestik Syrah-Kalecik Karası - Turkey, Western Anatolia (7/20/2007)
  65% Syrah, 35% Kalecik Karası; 12,5% abv; 9€. Dark red, very young looking. The nose is peppery and full of sweet, red berries. It seems very Shiraz-like (rather than Syrah-like). The palate is sweetly fruity, with some nice tannins: refreshing and attractive for not being too concentrated. Technically well made, and certainly much more than just for curiosity value.

I'm looking for a Cremant d'Alsace Rose' sparkler (I think the same one K Story posted in the July Wine Focus Forum). If I can't find that, I will open a Hess Collection Chardonnay and a German Riesling (probably from Christoffel).

Literally just had the first sip of a 1995 Houghton 'Jack Mann' from Western Australia. First impression is good.

Here in England it's pretty much the skies that are opening to dump several weeks worth of rain in a few hours..

A little cooler today, so we opened an '03 David Bruce SC PN--quite good.

About an hour ago I opened a 2005 Lorval Pinot Noir from France. Picked it up at Burton's earlier in the evening, and it's pretty good to my unsophisticated palate. At $5.99, I may head back tomorrow for a few more bottles.
Says the it was imported and bottled in Texas by Lorval, so is this a - what's the term? - consolidator, maybe?

One of my fav. producers. Peach, nectarine on the nose, plus spice, floral. Really stood up to the food, a nice curried shrimp pasta. Everything in order here but finish might have been a tad short? Naturally distinct!

Went wine tasting today at Chimney Rock. Really liked the 2004 Elevage red blend and the creamy but all steel (sur lees) Sauvignon Blanc-which is not a style I'm familiar with.

Also sampled a basic Bernard Ambroise "Vielles Vignes" Bourgogne 2005 that I absolutely loved-and I don't really care for Pinot Noir all that much.

Nothing too much because the bar exam is next week. So this weekend is my time to review and attempt to relax. I did open a bottle of Rose de Mouton Cadet (Rothschild 2006, approx $6 on sale in PA). I bought it at one of PA's low-end wine stores, so I wasn't expecting anything wonderful. But I was pleasantly surprised with this bottle. Nothing complex, but a nice summer quaffer with hints of strawberries and honeysuckle. Hard to do much better for that price!

My wine club picnic is this evening Bob, everyone is asked to bring a dish either veg or salad or dessert, and a bottle or two of wine. I am making a big bowl of the best potato salad anyone ever tasted, and I will also make a "Tunnel of Fudge" bundt cake. My wines (2 bottles) will be a Ch. Grand Traverse (Michigan) Edelzwicker and a bottle of ESJ pinot grigio. errr, I decided against the PG and elected to take a bottle of the ESJ Bone-Jolly rosé instead.

A few of the local geeks plus a certain attourney (sic) from Columbus, OH will descend upon Chateau 'Winger this evening. I'm not fully committed to my contribution yet but a 1995 Chapoutier Cote Rotie (La Mordoree) and a 2002 Selbach Oster Kabinett are likely candidates. Maybe a 1998 Jamet Cote Rotie if I persuade myself it is anywhere near ready to drink.

I hope you get to a decent evening restaurant or wine bar though - plenty of good ones in Torino and the famous aperitivo hour(s) to whet (or more usually destroy) your appetite.

If you're central, then Vitel Etonne at the via Po end of via San Francesco da Paola is a good wine bar serving good food (albeit somewhat erratic in the experiences we've had - but the best have been excellent). Taberna Libreria is an interesting little place just across via Po which is a wine bar, wine shop and bookshop. Also a good wine shop/bar across the Po (turn left at the Gran Madre church from 'The Italian Job), IIRC on via Monferrato. The restaurant (called Monferrato I think) a few doors down was pretty good last time, albeit the wine list wasn't as interesting as it could have been.

Plenty more good places though.

Find some time (and luggage space) for the chocolates.
