WTN: Catching Up (Burg, Rieslings, Beaujolais, Bordeaux, Grüner Veltliner)

Catching up on a few notes. These come from a series of dinners/evening at home.

2004 Louis Jadot Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux Clos de la Croix de Pierre
Supple strawberry and tart cherry flavors. Straightforward Burgundy that will never blow anyone away. I bought lots of 375s of this. It’s a great Tuesday night wine.

2001 August Kesseler Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spätlese Trocken
Creamed rocks on a bed of lime zest with a light dusting of peach essence. Amazing stuff. I bought some, but not nearly enough, and now it’s gone.

2000 J.u.H.A. Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Spätlese
Yes 2000 was a difficult year, but you cannot prove it by this bottle. Peach, cherry, pineapple and a light trace of rocks. Drinking fabulously well now.

2005 J.u.H.A. Strub Niersteiner Grüner Veltliner Feinherb
Pea shoots, peach and citrus zest. Just barely off dry and easy to quaff. Screwcapped Grüner Veltliner is a gift from beyond.

1999 Moulin St. Georges (St. Emilion)
Ripe red fruit, earth and a light touch of cedary oak. Supple and ready to go. There’s still some left in the cellar and I will be finishing it off while other, more beastly items slumber.

2004 J. P. Brun Domaine des Terres Dorées Beaujolais Cuvée l'Ancien Vieilles Vignes
Overly tart cherries with earth and something I have never been able to describe in any other way than tobacco ash. This has been an off and on wine for me, and my last bottle was all about the ash and an off.

2005 Coudert Fleurie Clos de Roilette
Ripe red cherries and more weight than 5 bottles of the Brun. Some tannic astringency suggest time will do this good. It certainly has the fruit for it.

2005 Dönnhoff Estate Riesling
White peach, gravelly rocks and a lingering aftertaste of lemon zest. Honest, off dry Riesling.

One of the thngs I like about Jadot is all the reasonably priced Burgs they sell in 375s.

Rheinhessen GV, huh? I see PJs has, must try.

I recently found some more bottles of the 04 Coudert Fleurie and it is really in a nice drinking spot right now. Still crunchy cranberry cherry fruit, but seems less tart than a year ago. Not as concentrated but also much less tannic than the 2005.

The last 2 bottles of the 05 Brun l'Anciene I've tried have been a little off, after 3 really good ones. Closing down, maybe?

A store near me used to have 1 L bottles of the Strub Niersteiner in stock for under $20. The last vintage they had was 2002. Incredible value for a tasty wine. I think it was Kab and not the Spatlese, though. I miss that one.

Thanks for the notes.

The Niersteiner Liters were always labeled kabinett (though it was frequently "legal" saptlese).

The Liter has been replaced by a new Strub wine called Soil to Soul. It a Dragonstone type of marketing but a much more balanced style of wine. (I've found recent Dragonstones a bit blowsy.)

Good to hear. I had trouble with it in the early stages.
