WTN: 2000 Clos du Marquis

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jul 19, 2007 7:54 am

2000 Clos du Marquis - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (7/18/2007)
Just singing with a grilled strip steak. Still a deep red/purple color. Aromas are mostly fruity but with a bit of smoke/cedar just starting to creep in. While on its own it's still a bit tough, it was sublime with the steak, blossoming into something much more refined and effusive.

I was able to buy a few half bottles of this a couple of years ago at a reasonable price. Too bad it's another wine that has since slipped beyond the bounds of reason. 2002 was the last vintage where I could stomach the price.

What do you consider beyong the pale, M. Buckner? I saw the 2004 CdM for low high $20s, is that reasonable?

Buckner?

Clos du Marquis anywhere in the $20s is a clear buy for me. I have not had the 2004 version, but then I haven't had a vintage of this that I did not like.

My issue is with the 2003 at $49.99 and the 2005/2006 vintages in the same/higher range.

It is interesting how much more expensive the 2003s are over the 2004 vintage. I think I bought one bottle of 2003, but have been collecting slowly modest 2004 chateaux.

It was the vintage of the century. Oh, wait, 2000 was the vintage of the century. Oh, sorry, 2005 is the vintage of the century. Oh, my bad, the weather in 2007 is getting much better, so it will be the vintage of the century.

Oh crap...let's just start over...
