WTN: 2006 Spirit of Scotch Block Cayuga White

by Howie Hart » Sat Jul 14, 2007 11:29 pm

Light straw color, a bit light on the nose with hints of melon and anise. Bone dry, with good, mouthwatering acidity and a long cleansing finish. Produce by PaulB from grapes obtained in the Toccalino Vineyard of the Halton Hills. Paul gave me this very nice wine at NiagaraCOOL. I'm not sure where the Halton Hills are. (Niagara Peninsula?) Very enjoyable and a very nice wine for a less than stellar growing year. Nice Job Paul. 8)
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Hiya Howie!

Thanks for the notes - I always appreciate your feedback. Yes - last year was extremely challenging, and as you may recall, I had a time when I didn't even know if I'd be making any wine at all. The Cayugas were the best looking grapes at this vineyard - even the Baco and Foch were pretty shabby looking. Successes across Niagara notwithstanding, 2006 will go down in my memory as a downright macabre year.

Now, as for the location of Scotch Block and the Toccalino vineyard ... They are just off Hwy. 25, north of Milton - against the Niagara Escarpment, but not at all in the Niagara Peninsula. The vineyard is west of the Greater Toronto Area - here is a Google Maps link - the vineyard is roughly 10 kilometres south of the green arrow.
