What are your favorite Orvieto Classicos?

by Paulo in Philly » Sat Jun 30, 2007 9:04 pm

After I am done leading our vocal/choral program in Umbria this summer I will spend 3 days in Orvieto to relax, decompose, and take a closer look at the white wines in the hill town of Orvieto, before returning to the US. Last time I was there was in the early 90's when I spent just one day - this was pre winegeek epiphany, although now looking back I had already begun to notice wine. It will be summer, so I thought focusing on a crisp white would be enjoyable. I also picked this town for practical reasons as it is not far from Spoleto or to get to the airport in Rome on the evening of the 9th.

What are your favorite Orvieto Classicos? Any producer recs??

I recently had a bottle of the 2006 Antinori Campogrande Orvieto Classico ($10). Snappy and crisp with great acid. Very refreshing.

Thanks, Clark! I actually just had this last week myself - not the best Orvieto Classico I have ever had, but certainly a very good QPR for $10! 8)

Paolo, it's nice to be back. It's been at least a couple of BB formats since I've been here.

David, thanks, and, no, you can't have all my Donnhoffs.

Sadly, I see so few Orvieti around these days---fewer and fewer all the time, and harder to find, especially when fresh and at their best---that there's not a whole lot of wines from which to choose anymore.

Bob, good to see you here. Stop by on occasion! We need Italian experts in the house more often
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

You can always meet me in Orvieto, Italy, on August 6th, to solve this problem, Hoke!!! 8)
