SacBee: MikeDunne On Darrell Corti....

by TomHill » Thu Jun 21, 2007 1:26 pm

One of my most favorite wine writers has an article in ystrday's SacBee on the Web buzz about Darrell's no high-alcohol wines in his store and Darrell's reaction to it all.
Love the quote on Darrell.."I made the rule, I can break it" regarding the possibility he might buy a high-alcohol wine if he happens to like it. Classic Darrell.

I thought that last line summed it up nicely. That shop is Darrell's domain and he'll do with it as he damn well pleases!

Kinda proves my point that new or casual consumers of wine will like low acid wines better. Corti is old school and bucking the consumer demand trend. We know who will win in the end. Maybe it is us that must change?

Rod,
I'm not sure that new or casual consumers are the market Darrell is seeking at CortiBros. If a new person came into and told Darrell that he was interested in getting into wine, I suspect Darrell could steer him to a few btls that he would enjoy. But YellowTail consumers would better be served at BevMo or such.
And, you're right, it is us who must change. But that does not mean that we must go back to liking soft/low acid wines. I think most new consumers who cut their teeth on YellowTail and the like eventually realize that acidity in an important character in the wine.

True Tom acid is important, but I am not sure it is inherently right that the taste of wine should be dominated by acid or wild yeast. Balance is in the eyes of the beholder. Grapes ripen fast here in 100 degree days with 65 degree nights. I wonder what the gold rush wines tasted like? Too much acid stunts the varietal character as well as ripeness dissolves the varietal character. When Corti pioneered the market for Amador wines the Zins were relatively low acid.

I like fruitiness and as a man I am not ashamed to say so. Time to go eat a tree ripened organic white nectarine.
