WTN: Prager and Paella

by Marc D » Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:27 pm

My wife made a Paella for Fathers day that had some poached lobster tail added in place of the other seafood. The wine was really a good match with the dish.

1999 Prager Riesling Smaragd Durnsteiner Kaiserberg (Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau) 6/17/2007

Medium gold color. At first the nose is almost all petrol and middle aged Riesling earth tones. With more air it develops some baked apples and candied lemon rind. Some salty bouillon like minerals. Very dry also. Plush texture but with fine acidic lift. Finishes with some tropical orange pineapple flavors. Very good and outstanding match with a paella made with lobster tail meat. The wine has synergy with the saffron in the rice and goes well with the rich lobster. 13 %abv. Cost was $25 on sale ~ 3 years ago. It improved overnight and a glass with lunch today had less petrol and was also more open. Enjoyable now with a decant but I think it has lots of life and development left.

I hope everyone had a great Father's day.

Best,
Marc

Lovely notes, Marc, and it indeed sounds like a great wine and food match! I have yet to taste an Austrian Riesling.

By the way, check out my post on the Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva 01 I had recently - truly showing off all the wonderful qualities I love of the sangiovese grape! No cab at all, just 10% canaiolo!

I read the Badia a Coltibuono note. Like the others, I've never seen the riserva version. It sounds delicious. I've tried their basic Chianti which was not too bad, forget which vintage.
