Zinfandel is a red variety, there is no grape named white Zinfandel, therefore the name White Zinfandel on a wine label is unlawful, ruled the EU in 2002 but since the market for it then in the EU was negligible nothing was done.
Now White Zin (& White Grenache etc) are a £130M business in the UK and any consumer that may have been confused is now familiar with the names and knows the wines are pink, the UK Food Standards Agency has stepped in to save the consumer being misled and has given companies 6 months to change labels. By 1 Jan 2008 White Zin is no more.
Thus our tax money is being spent.
So what will it be called? Blossom Hill will label theirs Zinfandel Rosé.
