Fathers Day Dinner wines.
Loring 2005 Gary's Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands 13.8% abv
Ruby red and somewhat dark for a pinot fading to a pink-purple edge. A nose of pleasant oak, black cherries that finished with a wiff of rich earth. Luscious fruit and smooth tannins on the midpalate. A long and luxurious finish of luscious and juicy red fruit and acidity. Nicely balanced. Exellent match with grilled fresh tuna. The tuna enhanced the purity of the fruit flavors giving the cherry and raspberry more presence on the palate.
St. Urbans-Hof Mosel Riesling Kabinett Piersporter Goldtropfchen 2005, 9.5% abv
Clear straw yellow. Expressive nose of lemon, pineapple, and a hint of petrol. Sweet fruit and acidity on the midpalate with floral overtones. Medium to long finish of clean acidity and juicy honeydew melom. This wine went best with the sinful potatoes as they tended to tame the sweetness of this wine. Definitely sweeter than a normal kabinett. I would class it as spatlese minimum and possibly auslese. Sweetness overpowered the grilled haddock and sauteed asparagus. Went best with the cherry cheesecake for dessert (Tells you how sweet this wine really was). Good wine but IMO too sweet to go with most food, except dessert.
