WTN: Caymus, Heitz Martha's, Laurel Glen, Pontet Canet, Clerc Milon

Brief notes on some wines served last night at a small dinner party for a friend's birthday:

1991 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa
Decanted for about an hour before being served, sports the classic eucalyptus and sour millk nose of a good Martha's. Burnished color, seems about peak, could hold here for years but drinks perfectly now. Just wonderful.

1995 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa
Our hosts only have one decanter, so this went in when after the Heitz was poured, which probably gave it 30 minutes of air. Totally youthful look and a bit tight on the palate. Almost no secondary development and still quite tannic, especially following the Martha's. Little secondary development, drinks okay but needs more time.

1995 Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma
My wine, and what a surprise. Two years ago this was showing almost jammy fruit and I thought the 95's were going to beat the 94's into the barn, but no, not now. This wine is in total lockdown and an hour in the decanter failed to budge it. So in the meantime we drank:

1997 Pontet Canet, Paulliac, Bordeaux
Also my wine. Drinks pretty well right out of the bottle, though some decanting would have helped as it only got better in the glass. Classic PC aromas, a little lighter than usual on the palate but very nice. Needed food; wish we'd had this with the beef kebobs and saved the Heitz for sipping, but I had no say in the order.

And last Thursday night we opened the 1986 Clerc Milon for our wedding anniversary. This one's drinking beautifully right now. Very traditional, lots of cedar and cigar and earth and old leather armchair stuff amid the plums and black cherry. A great bottle that assauged our disappointment over the tanked 86 Talbot we'd had earlier in the week.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise,

You opened one of my favorite Napa Cab (late comer to Heitz but love the stuff) and one mof my favorite "value??" Bordeaux. I love the 2000 PC and wish I could have stocked up a bit more. I've been buying every year of PC since then though and should start to look for some pre-2000's though they are not as inexpensive anymore.

Good to hear about the Pontet Canet -- last time I opened one I was disappointed. Their second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet, was surprisingly good from this vintage.

Ah, that Clerc Millon sounds lovely.

Jenise-have you had any experience with the "Trailside" bottling from Heitz? I liked it at the winery last year (Martha's was long sold out)

Brian, I'm not Jenise, but we do trade clothes on Thursday nights.

The Trailside has been a little underwhelming to me, especially for the price. The last one that I tried was the 2000, and my notes were not very kind to the wine...

Just following through on Randy's earlier comment.

Last month, during a dinner hosted by our small wine tasting group in NYC with the principal of Pontet Canet, Alfred Tesseron, for the vintage 1997, Tesseron was much more enthusiastic about his second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet Canet, which we were not able to taste. I am now looking to source this locally.

Michael, do you have any notes on the 2000 Pontet Canet? I've been holding off on my 2000 PC, assuming that it was either closed, still too primary, still harshly tannic, still a bit disjointed, or all four, but definitely not mature yet. It sounds like yours have been not only ready to go, but very good right now - right????

Jenise,
Did you ever go back to the 1995 Laurel Glen?
I'd be very curious to know what you found when/if you did.

Brian, my experience mirrors Randy's--it's not a bad wine but it underperforms at it's asking price.

No, Jim. And I had to leave it with our hosts, of course. I'll call Jeff this afternoon and see if it came around last night.
