WTN: Souverain and Saintsbury

by Jay Labrador » Thu Jun 14, 2007 12:41 pm

Short notes on some wines served at the cocktails celebrating the first anniversary of Lemuria restaurant.

Chateau Souverain Chardonnay 2004 - Very smooth with minimal oaking. Hints of orange and mint. Has some sweetness to it but that's fine with me. Round, polished. friendly wine. Went very nicely with scallops.

Saintsbury Garnet Carneros Pinot Noir 2004 - Strawberry on the nose. Burnt fruit flavors. Soft and spicy. Nothing special but not bad either.

Chateau Souverain Alexander Valley Merlot 2004 - Lots of ripe berry on the nose. Alcohol heat comes through as well. Just a bit too much creamy oak. Sweet, round and soft. Chocolate and coffee. Another uncomplicated, friendly wine.

Minimal oaking on a Souverain chardonnay! They must have changed styles--it used to be fairly heavily oaked and with heavily toasted barrels at that. But the winery's been sold--someone's turning the property into a hotel or something. Maybe the wine in your bottle no longer has anything to do with Souverain the winery as I knew it.

I was just thinking the same thing. Last Souverain I tried ( it has been a while, though) was butterscotch vanilla and tropical fruits. Interesting.

2004 Souverain Cab?

by RichardAtkinson » Thu Jun 14, 2007 1:18 pm

Oddly enough...we just finished a bottle of the 2004 cab on Sunday.

I had been searching for a replacement "Go-To" cab to replace the Martini's that I used to purchase. The Souverain was recommended to me on these boards. I think its a bit oakier than the old Martini Napas or AV's were, but not by much. Very nice bottle of wine though in the $20 range.

Worth taking another look at if you haven't tasted it in awhile. I be picking up another bottle this weekend. It paired nicely with a couple of grilled NY Strips.
