WTN - Cancello del Barone Barolo 2000 (my first notes!!)

by Toni F » Sun Jun 10, 2007 10:34 am

This board has inspired me to try my hand at jotting down some tasting notes. Here is my first try...

June 9, 2007 - Cancello del Barone Barolo 2000 (Costco $29.00)

The color is a cross between deep garnet and eggplant with a subtle deep amber rim. The bouquet when first opened hinted of plum, some clove but after sitting for a short while I picked up the scent of tobacco, cherry and leather. Fruity but not the least bit sweet, very, very smooth. A medium finish with no noticeable tannins and a whisp of oak.

We're not big meat eaters so we enjoyed this wine with a brown rice ziti with fresh tomato - basil sauce covered with fresh mozzarella. The smoothness of the wine was a great balance to the acidity of the sauce. It was like silk, complimenting the creaminess of the melted fresh mozzarella.

Having only tasted one or two other Barolo’s to compare this one to, I would say this wine is a decent value for the money, I know they can be somewhat pricey.

Toni, congratulations on your first tasting note, it's perfect. It's objective, but personal enough to convey what the experience of enjoying it. This is the great value of TNs written by friends vs. the reviews of professioonal critics.

Very nicely done, Toni. I like the way you expressed your observations and impressions without cluttering the discussion with pretentious literary phrases (e.g. ... aromas like a breeze over a field of wildflowers ...). Also, your experience matching big wines with non-meat meals will be very helpful when folks post questions to this Forum.

Welcome -- Clark

Nice note, Toni
Did you notice the wine changing at all over the course of the night, or maybe the next day?

Bill,
Yes, we did notice a change after some time. The wine opened up considerably and for me, the taste of tobacco intensified. We enjoyed it so much, it didn't last until the next day. ; )

Well done, Toni. You've conveyed a good deal about the wine and your reactions to it -- the essence of a good tasting note.

Welcome to WLDG. Regards, Bob
