WTN: cheaP Nebbiolo

Betsy made some crepes, which she filled with a mixture of mushrooms, spinach, and Boucheron, and then baked, and served with brocolli. Mushrooms made me think PN, but the goat cheese made me nervous, so I went a little cheaper than the Burg I had in mind, and switched to Nebbiolo. The 2005 Produttori del Barbaresco Nebbiolo (Langhe) is quite high in acid, with sharp cherry and cranberry fruit. Some mushroom and earth with time, but no tar. So hey, it's not a great Barolo, but it is a nice lively Nebbiolo for under $15, and the acidity lets it stand up to the tangy tartness of the goat cheese. Good value. Solid B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency

Sounds like you made the right choice, Dale, and not bad for $15!

I look forward to seeing you and meeting Betsy on Tuesday. Which years exactly did she play in Spoleto?

I have still not decided what to bring to our off-line. I will need to check the stores. All I have here are every day wines. Tonight I am opening a Coudoulet de Beaucastel CdR 01.

Paulo, if you do stop at Astor, that's where I got the co-op Nebbiolo. Even off sale it's only $17.

Meliora Quarter was quartet in residence for all 3 Spoleto Festivals (Australia one was shortlived), the years they were in Italy would have been late 80s, but exact ones you'll need to ask her Tuesday.

How was the Coudoulet? Have a couple napping

The Coudoulet was beautiful. Very spicy - reminded me of certain Southern Italian wines I've had in the past; lots of black cherry/prunes/raisin spice. I was surprised how the tannins were quite soft, but with still a vibrant "zing" on the finish. I had it with angel hair pasta in a very hearty tomato/canadian bacon/red pepper sauce, but I would have rather had a beef stew.

In the late 80's I was in Spoleto: 1987, 1989.... Looking forward to Tuesday!
