Dr. Loosen Riesling Spätlese #17 Ürziger Würgarten 1995
The corks here are definitely a problem, even bottles from perfect storage (cool, humid, dark, as it should be) sometimes show ullage, like this one. What was in the glass seemed utterly pristine all the same. Medium pale yellow-green. The typical spicy-herbal and strongly minerally terroir expression of ÜWG, a medium-weight and appley-fruity vintage, a refreshing wine best served before a meal to wet people’s appetite, spicy-herbal acidity. Fair length. Rating: 88
Gesellmann Chardonnay Trockenbeerenauslese 1995
The Gesellmann in Deutschkreuz. Half bottle. Golden colour. Quite hugely viscous, blanched almonds, thick apricoty mango, some brown bread roastedness left from the botrytis, tangerine acidity. Doing well in bottle, more so than I had expected, given bottles I tasted from less cool storage already seemed to be tiring several years ago. Quite long, if not more palate-saturating with residual sweetness and flavour intensity than long. A positive surprise. Rating: 91
