WTN: Gru times two

Schloss Gobelsburg “Steinsetz” Gruner Veltliner 2005 (Langenlois)

Very clear medium gold. Freshly cut citrus and garden earth on the nose, with bean and pepper notes. Medium- to full-bodied, with layers of grapefruit and grapefruit zest, some sweet green pea, and a dash of club soda. Great depth. Long finish. $21 ($16 on discount). 12.5% alcohol.

Brundlmayer “Berg-Vogelsang” Gruner Veltliner 2005 (Kamptal)

Shiny, very clear, very pale gold. Soft and pretty scents of uncut green apple and meadow grass, with whiffs of lavender, rainwater, and white pepper. Medium bodied and buttery in texture, with a hint of spritz. Flavor notes of apple, cream, citrus zest, and light pepper. Softer profile than I expected, but quite nice. $24 ($18 on discount). 12.5% alcohol.

David--
Same store, same sale, I picked up a Donnhoff 2004 (Kabinett, I'm pretty sure). They make Riesling in Germany--who knew?!? Maybe with some crab this summer, or would you recommend otherwise?

Those were two of my favorites from 2004, thanks for the report on the 05's.

Did you have a preference for either one? I was really impressed with the 04 Steinsetz, and thought the Brudlmeyer was pleasant and good drinking, but maybe a hair below the Gobelsburg. The Steinsetz had a lot of the lentil and white pepper Gruner flavors.

Best,
Marc

I consider the Gobelsburg Steinsetz one of the top QPR wines in Austria.

As for that Donnhoff Kabinett - let 'er rip with the crabs. I prefer drinking Donnhoff kabinetts very young.

Marc--
Those are my feelings about the '05s exactly (with the caveat that I've tasted fewer than a dozen GVs in my life). Sorta reversed my expectations, as I thought Brundlmayer had the somewhat better reputation.

Your light has just gone out.

You are in the dark and likely to be drinking a gru.
