I dined at one of the best restaurants in Chapel Hill Saturday--Il Palio in the Siena Hotel.
I asked for a sip of this Mosel Riesling and a sip of a Lagrein rose' wine from Alto Adige district of Italy to decide which to order by the glass. They were both nice but I felt the Riesling would go better with my entree of red snapper with jerusalem artichokes and asparagus. (I had a delicious endive salad with a caramelized cipollini onion, slivers of hazelnut and gorgonzola dressing as appetizer. It was like a glorified cole slaw with creamy dressing only better.)
The Riesling was slightly sweet but balanced with natural acidity. It dances across the palate in a spritely, evanescent style. Delicate white peach flavor. Elusive but charming.
In retrospect, I think the red snapper with both a white and a brown sauce would have stood up to the rose' wine or a light red wine as well. The asparagus was roasted rather than steamed and either wine would do.
