Revisited a couple mature wines this evening. Earlier and current notes follow:
2001 Scherrer Chardonnay, Ft. Ross Vineyard Reserve, Sonoma Coast
4/2/05 Bright yellow gold to a clear edge. Lean mineral qualities and fresh-squeezed lemon fruit with lush peach overtones, a hint of apricot and vanillin oak on the nose. Bright, expansive entry to a solid core of lemon chiffon fruit, bright citric acidity enhanced by a fine minerality, creamy oak overtones and a bit of glycerine, medium to full-bodied, with a relatively long crisp, slightly spicy finish.
5/18/07 Bright yellow gold to a clear edge. Yeasty, leesy qualities, vanillin oak and creamy lemon chiffon fruit, driving minerality and a note of green apple on the nose. Tightknit, spicy entry to a tight center of bright lemon chiffon fruit, pie spice, well-integrated oak at the edge, lemon and malic acidity beneath, fine mineral qualities, nervy balance, moderate consistent finish.
1997 Arcadian Pinot Noir, Pisoni Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
12/21/03 Bright red-blue to a medium garnet edge. Lean herbal and metallic tones accompany chalky cherryish fruit on the slightly restrained nose. Soft, easy entry yields to mature dry cherry fruit core buoyed by nervy, piquant acidity; there is dash of sweet wild cherry on the follow but it quickly fades into a moderately long taut, piquant finish.
05/18/07 Medium ruby to a red-brown edge. Polished mature patina of dark cherry fruit, sassafras and earthy-herbal qualities, horsehair and mineral on the nose. Lean, slightly piquant entry to a tangy center where tart red cherry and dried red berry fruit and “zingy” cherry acidity vie with notes of rhubarb and slight herbaceousness, a “wired” high energy aspect, earthy and basic, rather long consistent finish. No charm here, but certainly a lot of interest.
