WTN: 2006 Penner Ash Roseo (rose of pinot noir)

by Jenise » Wed May 16, 2007 11:50 am

Copper pink, great nose, but strangely light on acid and with heavy RS. I could barely get through a glass ice cold.

RS in Rose is a definite no-no

My opinion, too, Jim. Very disappointing since this producers pinots are so good.

How could that happen? If this is saignée, was the bleeding done too early before fermentation was complete....or was sugar added during fermentation or after the bleeding??? Interesting..

Not always. Messmer Spätburgunder Weissherbst Auslese 2001 is one of the most memorable dessert wines I've had. But this had the acidity to match the RS.

Agreed, Otto....I'm not against RS...I love dessert wines....

However, I'm guessing this Rose was not conceived as a dessert wine, and while at times some RS is expected in, say, some German wines, I guess I don't expect it in a Rose that doesn't also describe itself as White Zin!! 8)

Ive got your wonderful Musar queued up for this weekend!! I'll let you know how it goes!!

That is disappointing. Her wines are usually too heavy on the oak for me...but I do think highly of the quality.

Jason, this is only the second Penner Ash wine I've had. The other was an 05 pinot a month or so ago which I found too oaky on day one, but it it had really shed the wood by the time I got back to it on day three.

Interesting. That would make sense. I haven't had many PAs with age but with the abundance of fruit they get into the wine...it probably all works out.

Quite. But, I can envisage a good off-dry rosé also - if it has the acidity to back it up. No need to be dogmatic - but I agree that sweetness and lack of acidity sounds rather horrible. BTW, why is it called white Zin instead of pink Zin, since it so obviously is pink? Look forward to the Musar note.
