2005 Au Bon Climat, Santa Barbara County, Pinot (13.5% abv.)
This is a rather strange blend of 82% Pinot Noir and 18% Mondeuse.
Pale, almost translucent, in the Burgundy stem. Fuller bodied than the color might suggest. The nose is predominately earth/forest floor with a bit of funk thrown in. Definitely smells like a Pinot. Plenty of bright cherry fruit and there is enough acidity to keep this from being a Cali-fruit bomb. A nice array of spices, including clove and cinnamon, blend into a pleasant finish. Paired with grilled wild salmon fillets.
I had tasted this wine 6 or 8 months ago and thought it to be awkward and clumsy. That is no longer the case. Priced right at about $20, I'll not back up the truck, but will buy a few more bottles to have in the cellar.
