Kraski Teran - any U.S. distributor?

by Chris De Young » Fri May 11, 2007 4:40 pm

Hello,

I was visiting friends in Slovenia a few years ago, and discovered Teran while I was there, but I've never been able to find any in the U.S. I suspect that it's a small enough niche that I'm out of luck, but just in case I'm wrong, does anyone happen to know of any U.S. outlet for this unique wine?

Thanks!

Teran is arguably the same grape as Refosco. Wine-searcher.com shows several sites selling Refosco.

Hrm, thanks -- I'll give that a shot, though I suspect that the Italian Refosco is not going to be the same as the wine I'm looking for; my impression is that a lot of the character of the Teran I had comes from the Kras region conditions as much as the grape itself (lots of iron, for example).

But I could certainly be wrong; I'll see what I can find.

For the curious:

Slovene having a lot fewer vowels than Italian, it's Refosk on the Slavic side of the border. I'm afraid your original assumption was probably correct though, Chris. As I'm sure you've found already, Slovenia is a great little country with really nice wines, but they make so little, and it's so little known in the US, that it's really hard to find much, and what we do get is mostly the more familiar wines from Brda.
