WTN: Folonari Valpolicella Classico 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Thu May 10, 2007 6:48 pm

From a 375 ml bottle.

When my wife and I were first starting out on our "wine journey", this used to be a regular feature in our house. Haven't tried it in years so, in addition to the new label, I was wondering what else might have changed, for the better or worse. I must confess that I was quite impressed.

Light to medium cherry red color in the glass.

Tangy, spicy and smoky nose

Good cherry fruit, tangy, perhaps a bit of chocolate, good acidity but surprisingly soft and full in the mouth, with that lovely bitter edge that I look for in a good Valpolicella.

Leather and earth on the finish, along with mouthwatering and cleansing acidity that lasts a fairly long time.

Went very well with pizza.

Purchased for $7.15 (Canadian).

Valpo and pizza are "part of the Creator's plan," to borrow a phrase from Hugh Johnson (who originally applied it crab and Riesling).
