2003 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese #17

This was opened at a local tasting and I was interested in seeing what, if anything, has happened to it since I tried it perhaps 18 months ago. There is a bit of somewhat simple fruit/citrus flavors but absolutely devoid of any acidity that I could detect. The wine was totally uninteresting/disappointing and I would not pay $5 for it, let alone the $30 offer price. Even in an off/difficult year like 2003, I would have thought Prum could have coaxed something from the grapes. Everyone gathered around the "tasting barrel" had a pained/confused/WTF expression on their faces when sipping this, so it wasn't just me.

This just reinforces my intent just to avoid Europeean 2003's when several vintages either side have produced wines with credentials much more suited to my particular drinking/cellaring preferences. This is not to say that all 2003's are crappola - just there's still so much stuff out there more suited to my needs. And who can really afford a mere drop in the ocean in any case?
Cheers,

David

Combine a wine from a vintage with shockingly low acid plus being in the prime of the "shut down" stage for German Riesling & you will get nothing from the bottle.

I have not had the AP#17 version, so I can't speak to the specific wine. Prum made a great 2003 Bernkasteler Badstube Auselse, but perhaps the spatlese escaped him. Happens to the best of them.
