I know we all profess a varied palate. But is there one that you drink more than others? A house-wine if you must. For me, it is usually a Zin - goes well with everything.

CdR type blends do it for me, although Italian blends work too. Single varietals are boring at the every day level.

We just love cabs, and although admitedly they do not go well with all foods, I seem to be able to drink them in most circumstances. There are cabs that are lighter bodied and drink well young, and cabs that age supremely well and evolve with time. Especially with the cold, long winters in central Ohio, a nice cabernet (and perhaps a cigar at the same time) seems to fit well.

Cabs for me, although there are a lot of other wines I will reach for. I have to admit that living alone  I don't generally drink a lot during the work week, although with the opening of our wine bar/store downtown, I'll sometimes hang out there.

Brian,

I share the same problem - living and drinking alone has its challenges. I try to drink the rest of the wine the next evening and focus on how the wine tastes the second day.

I hate to be a contrarian, but I had to vote "other" to reflect the diversity of my pleasures. I may drink more Italian and French wines than any others, but the infinite variety of wine is what makes it so interesting to me, and I honestly can't single out one variety or region as my "everyday" go-to wine. I just can't do it. It might be Sangiovese today, Muscadet tomorrow, Grüner Veltliner on Friday and Burgundy for Saturday night.

With us, it's seasonal. For the next 6 months, our "house" wines will be Muscadet, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gamay. In October, we'll cycle over to Cotes du Rhone, Pinot Noir and more Gamay

Of course, all of this is trumped by food selection. Since almost all of our wine is consumed with dinner, what we have for dinner will dictate what we drink. But, since our eating habits also change on a seasonal basis, there's a bit of correlation with the trends noted above.

Home made here. I fill my cellar every year with Cab Franc, Gamay, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cayuga, Steuben, Vidal, and whatever else I can get my hands on. In even number years I make bubbly.

I really don't think varietally when it comes to drinking decisions. At the moment, in my own words, wines I would open on ordinary occasions are are: Mosel Kabinett, Clare Valley Riesling, English White (blend of wierd grapes - Sauv Blanc type effect), Minervois White (another blend - Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Rousanne sort of thing), Morgon, California Zin. Effectively I aim to have a range of styles that I can draw on. Oh yes, and for Summer drinking I am about to add Moscato d'Asti to the list. But in the spirit of the poll I voted for Riesling, as that is the grape of 2 of my "everyday" wines, albeit in very different styles.

I voted for Riesling. Mainly because I own a lot of it - mostly Oz, but with a fair swag of German and Alsace thrown in for very good reasons. It's also worth mentioning my wife loves it (and whites in general but has a lot of trouble with the 'bigger' reds, excluding very fine red burgs )

And, for the most part, it delivers considerable bang for your bucks!
Cheers,

David

Other, the wife and I are big on Sangiovese.
I can certainly see that you know your wine. Most of the guests who stay here wouldn't know the difference between Bordeaux and Claret.

No way to vote for just one. I am with Robin, depends on the food and weather.

Red: Sangiovese

White: Sauvignon Blanc

These are the varietals we buy the most of. But there is broad range of quality for Sangiovese. But, for the most part, we buy simple chiantis and chianti classicos for meals. Saving CCR's for special meals.

Like Walt and Robin: I love variety, and it takes a large variety to pair wine to the food I make.

This is starting to confirm my suspicions that this is a Riesling-heavy crowd. And how the heck did I forget to add Rhone Blends in there? or forget Italian wines?

No 'go to' or 'house' wine for us. There's a wide spread of countries and grapes.
Cabernet, Shiraz and Nebbiolo based wines probably dominate the cellar, but many of these will be sleeping for a while before drinking.

Quite intentioanally, the wines we drink tend to vary regularly.

Like Robin, Walt, and Jenise, I'm more likely to pick something not on the list, so I voted other.

I like variety and unusual wines, as shown by my last ten consumed wines: Alsatian Muscat, Spanish Monastrell, Argentinian Chardonnay (used most of that for cooking), Minervois, 17-year-old German Riesling :D , late-harvest Viognier, Negroamaro rose, Japanese Koshu, a Grenache Blanc blend, and Hungarian Kadarka.

Of those on the list, however, Riesling is my favorite (which lends further support to Shaji's suspicions).

I voted for Pinot Noir which is probably the largest percentage in my collection. However, I like more whites and rose wines in the summer and go on streaks of zins, or others. I could also see some of the basic Rioja or Cote du Rhone as an everyday wine but have not indulged in large purchases in those areas.
