WTN: 2003 Sea Smoke PN Southing

2003 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing (SRH)
I think this is the first time I have tried the 03. I loved the 01 and 02. I am a sucker for SRH aromatics…so I like this. The attack on this wine was leaner than I would expect from Sea Smoke. Very nice right at the front but then the mid palate came up a little hollow. A touch of dill shows up. The finish comes up a little muddled with chocolate. Heat and alcohol are present. The wine goes from great aromatics and tasty front palate to not working. Might be a phase but I am concerned because of the heat. I will wait about 18 months and hope for the best. Scores big for aromatics and front palate. 89 pts.
Peace,
Jason

Never had a Sea Smoke, but I'm interested, and you make even this not-sure-of-it wine sound intriguing.

Jenise, I would suspect there are other wines from the region that you would enjoy more. I got on the list early on the recommend of B. Loring and they have been a decent value ... but I may go off the list for the 05 vintage. Well I may still buy the Southing. I like it when I want a ripe somewhat oaky Cali pinot.

I think there are young vines so maybe there is a lot of upward potential.

I only ordered from Sea Smoke one year. You start out with miniscule allocations and I decided there were other wineries I would rather favor with my dollars.

Personally, I like Sea Smoke. And yes, it takes about 3 years on their mailing list before you can buy a case. They start you out with about 3 bottles the first year, about 8 the second year and then if you buy those you can buy a case the thrid year. I like the fact that it isn't very oaky.

Well, I guess not too oaky based on comparison to some others.
