2006 Santola Vinho Verde / Portuguese White

These wines are fast becoming my favorite warm weather quaff. This is the second Portuguese white of this style that I’ve tried. Like the last one ( 2006 Gazela) this wine is lightly effervescent and very dry. The nose is somewhat funky, but not unpleasant w/ musky peach and citrus. On the palate, there is peach & lime w/ hints of earthiness backed up by a vibrant acidity.

The frizzante nature of the wine coupled with the acidity and fruit really makes this a juicy refreshing quaff for outside warm weather imbibing. Pop the cork back into it and refrigerate it for the next day if you want. It will maintain most of its character.

If you like NZ Sauvignon Blancs or Trocken style Rieslings, these wines would be worth a look. You won’t find the depth of flavors or complexity with the Vinho Verde as you would with those others. But, its a simple summer quaff at a great price.

Price @ 5.49 / bottle.
