WTN: Anniversary wine

by Tom N. » Sun Apr 22, 2007 6:47 pm

It was our 23rd wedding anniversary and we had a nice dinner planned and prepared by our sons, Eric and Patrick. The menu was: crab cakes (Patrick), sinful potatoes (Eric), gorgonzola salad with roasted pecans (prepared by my wife, Betty) and a red raspberry vinaigrette, pan-seared asparagus, and strawberry shortcake for dessert.

I wanted special wine for this occasion so I went down into my cellar and pulled out a riesling because my wife's favorite wine is riesling and I thought it would be a good match with the meal. But not just any riesling. This wine was a gift from my brother, Bob and it is very fine riesling. Thanks, Bob.

Brilliant golden yellow. Petrol, pineapple, and melon on the expressive nose. Great midpalate grip with citrus fruits, petrol, and a strong backbone of acidity. Wonderful long luxurious finish of melons, grapefruit, and a hint of pepper.

Wonderful match with the gorgonzola salad with the petrol and acidity of the wine seeming to nicely mesh with the cheese and raspberry. Nice match with the crab cakes and sinful potatoes (especially with the pockets of pepper). But not a very good match with the asparagus.

wine: 1998 Zobinger Gaisberg riesling (trocken) Alte Reben, Kamptal/Osterreich, weingut Hirsch-Kammern-Kamptal, Austria

A toast to 23 years of wedded bliss was made during the meal.

Congratulations to both you and Betty, 23 years is milestone that is worth shouting about. The meal sounds great, and the wine no less so. Of course I can't even remember my own 23rd anniversary it was so long ago. :) Looking forward to seeing the Noland Bro's in Ann Arbor.

Congratulations Tom! You better be planning for the big "2-5" right now. Mine is coming up in four years and I'm already looking at prices for good Margaux, La Tache, and Yquem, or maybe a reasonable fare to France so that we can attend one of Francois' dinners. That might actually be cheaper.

Thanks Sam, Bob, and Bruce,

I have started to think about what we might want to do on our 25th. I have a 2001 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg riesling auslese in my cellar. This is supposedly a stellar wine that would be good to celebrate our 25th. It should be drinking nicely after 8 years. Another possibility is a trip to wine country in California where my wife has relatives. Whatever we decide it will be something special and good.

Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Noland. The best dinners always seem to be anniversaries, and I wish the two of you many more.

Tom,
I am glad I could be a small part of your anniversary. I am also glad you enjoyed it. Ruth and I wish you many more. After celebrating 30 in February, do not be surprised on how fast they start to accumulate...

Well OW,

Funny you should mention them. My oldest, Cody, has already expressed interest in going to MoCool. He will be 21 this year, but not until November. So, I guess next year will be the first year he can legally come. Although, he can drink legally here in Canada at 19. He will be following in the footsteps of your daughter. A time-honored family tradition!
