2005 Cotes du Rhone

WTN: 2005 Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone - AOC Cotes du Rhone; Terres d'Avignon; 14% alcohol; $13 for 750 ml.

Thought that I'd give this a shot given the buzz on the 2005 vintage. I opened it yesterday and found it to be a bit clunky. Today, it has come through in admirable form, rounding out very nicely. It works very well with food. Seriously heavy red fruit here, but I can still detect a bit of the characteristic garrigue. Nice length and mouthfeel with phenols doing their thing. Deep garnet color amd wonderful nose. Acid and tannin are there behind the fruit and provide adequate structure. A year in the cellar and this would be exceptional. Would buy it again, but won't get my hopes up as something this good usually "gets gone" very quickly at my favorite bottle shop.

Thanks for the notes, Dave; I have one of these cued up for an upcoming Red Wings game. I'll give it some air and try it with lamb burgers. We've been fond of past vintages of these.

Cheers,
