Opened an '88 Rauzan-Sigla that has been sitting in the cellar since release and two value '05
white Burgs to see if either is worth putting in the cellar
'88 Rauzan-Segla: I had high hopes for this wine since like '75 I think '88 can be a rewarding classical drink once the tannins resolve and if the fruit lasts. Served with grilled lamb chops. Decanted the wine for about 1 hour. The nose was fantastic with hints of cellar fruit and classic Bordeaux. It was a very austere wine with yielding but still tightly wound tannins. The wine had some hidden fruit but was not friendly and one can onlly hope for some more evolution. I enjoyed the wine but was hoping for more. Put half the wine in a 375 and recorked. Opened it two days later with only minimal softening. Again, a race between tannins and fuit.
'05 Macon Village Perrusset: A KL import, which in my book gives it a couple points right off the bat. Floral nose of white pear fruit. Round mouthfilling pear and other non citrus furit flavors with a hint of tartness in the background. Think this wine is destined to be enjoyed over the next couple years. My wife liked this wine best of the two Burgs but I preferred the second wine below. Good value at $13.99
'05 Chablis VV O. Savary: I have had this KL import in '03 and '04 and was very impressed. Metallic/mineral nose. Typical Chablis characteristics with nice crisp yet approachable fruit. It had a lingering finish. At first I thought it was a little thin in the middle but after about 1/2 hour it opened and what I confused with body was just a wine that needed some time. Put a cork in the bottle and had a 2nd glass in two days. The wine was much more approachable. KL claims you can drink this wine now but also hold it for quite a few years. I agree and at $18.99 a very nice wnie.
