RIESLINGT SCHLOSSBERG II 1997 - Domaine Weinbach - Colette Faller et ses filles.
Some five years ago I reported finding this wine bland and dull with too low acidity and about two years later noted its more up-market stable mate Riesling Sainte-Catherine 1997 similarly. There ensued some discussion in which, I think, John Trombley and Thor Iverson (where are they?) amongst others said that I was giving a typical description of Riesling in its dumb stage and that it should open up and develop complexity with more age. I was sceptical. Well, it looks as if, fortunately, they were right.
N: Rich notes of white fruit mingled with burnished mineral and typically Riesling hints of petrol. P: Mouth-filling, burnished and quite rich and still low in acidity but now exhibiting compensatingly good aromatic complexity. Slighly marred by some signs of alcoholic burn on the finish and lack of bright focus but now a highly enjoyable mature Riesling, if not perfect.
I am glad that I did not unload these bottles.
