WTN: 10 wines, 9 bottles (includes some fantastic ESJ wines)

by David M. Bueker » Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:31 am

Most of the group got together last night to sample a wide range of wines with a focus on several from Edmunds St. John. Needless to say the ESJs did not disappoint. I also managed to make ten wines out of 9 bottles.

1. 2005 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Vieilles Vignes Clos des Briords: Bright lemon and other citrus peel aromas. Bracing and refreshing while also being medium bodied (richer than typical Muscadet). Delicious stuff with a very peppery finish.

2. 2005 Edmunds St. John Shell & Bone White Wine (Paso Robles): Peach and flowers. Very pretty on the nose. Rich & full bodied on the palate with lots of fruit, and good balance. This opened up over the course of the evening. Excellent, and preferred by several members of the group over the Muscadet. (I thought both very fine, but then I’m a white wine fanatic…) Not trying to compare this to the Muscadet, just wanted to drink both.

3. 1999 Edmunds St. John Sangiovese Matagrano (Sierra Foothills): Bright cherry but also a sort of volatile, glue-like streak on the nose. Crisp cherry fruited palate with some dustiness, but something is not quite right with the acidity here. Seems like an off bottle. Judgment withheld on this wine.

4. 1998 Pride Mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Here began a bit of an experiment. This wine was from magnum. This was half of the magnum, decanted about 3 hours before serving. Lots of eucalyptus, dusty cassis and burnished wood. If I had not known the identity of the wine I would have guessed lots of Cab Franc in this. Lots of structure, but well balanced by the material.

5. 2003 Edmunds St. John Syrah Bassetti Vineyard (San Luis Obispo): Wine of the night. Hands down. This is all about structure right now, but it’s got all the material in reserve to handle it. Dark fruit, tar, earth, new leather and boatloads of ripe tannins. The guesses were all over the place, from the Northern Rhone (!) to California (!!) to one guess of young Sociando-Mallet (!?!). The common theme was that everyone liked it a lot. I will be stuffing my other bottles of this deep into the cellar and forgetting them for a long time. Consensus wine of the night for the group. Find it and buy it. This is great Syrah.

6. 1998 Pride Mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Here’s the other half of the magnum, which was decanted about 90 minutes before serving. Surprisingly this shows more advanced (well, not that surprising, as there was plenty of air in the bottle after decanting the 1st half) with better integration of the tannin and wood elements into the whole. Overall both halves of the magnum were very good (1998 was not so bad in all cases). No this was not a top flight Cal Cab, but it showed mature, very drinkable and with good balance. I was glad to have had it. Most people preferred the prior half of the mag, but I liked this better.

7. 2001 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel (California): Sweet herbs, bright cherry and berry fruit and lots of appealing earthy and leathery aromas. Very well integrated and drinking ever so well right now. Just delicious, and a screaming value at the $15 I paid for it.

8. 2001 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas:
Dark berry liqueur with a swizzle stick of rosemary. This is very young and showing almost none of what it’s got in reserve. There’s good balance here though, so future development will be positive.

9. 1999 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Classique: Warm earth, black fruit and leather. Finely balanced and crying out for a roasted leg of lamb. Very good, but I am getting very tired.

10. 1999 Domaine Chante Perdrix Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Whoa, this will wake you up. The most animale of the group, though that did calm down after some time in the glass to show more classic earthy, leathery character on top of warm, ripe berry fruit. I loved this, but it was controversial with the rest of the group. But that’s ok, as I got to keep the leftovers. Both this and the Bosquet des Papes are drinking well now, and I see no reason to age them any longer. Drink up while you wait for the 1998s and 2001s to come into their own.

Great notes. I have been hearing a lot about ESJ wines - need to find them here in PA. I also enjoy your contributions on TalkShoe, David!

Good stuff there, David. Another rave review for the '03 Bassetti. Sounds like I'd better order more.

Bill,

You would think we could figure out a way to sell him out of a wine that only has about 130 cases. The quality is as good or better than any Syrah I have had from California and compares favorably with much of the best of the Rhone Syrahs I have had. If the label said Kosta Browne there would be a line a mile long for triple the price.

That said, if you do order more...get me some. Let's get this transcontinental shipping train headed from Mass to CT instead of the other way around.

Paulo...thanks!

I still have over a half a case of the 2001 Bassetti in my cellar. It tasted great from the get go but obviously will improve with time. Anyone able to compare the two wines?

I had the '01 Bassetti back in February. I prefer the '01 for drinking over the next 5-7 years, but the '03 is a long haul wine. It has more material, but lots more tannin than the '01. Love 'em both though.

I really loved the '01 Basetti, but couldn't find any more in NYC area (I tried calling everyone Bowler said had ordered some).

If anyone is ordering '03 Basetti to NE, I'd be happy to split a case. :)

Thanks for notes.

For all the free promotion you do for Steve he ought to set you up with a nice mixed case.

Make sure the invite is in the mail!

I've had no luck locating any of the '03 Bassetti, either, but I've found the '01 at a local retailer who has assured me that it's "killer". I'm looking forward to picking up a couple of bottles - I've never had any of the ESJ before, and David's description has me intrigued.

Hell, I'd work as an occasional ESJ sales rep in Massachusetts for free. No wines/pay needed beyond the knowledge that I would ensure the continuation of some of the best QPR wines in the world.

Joe,
Me too!! ESJ was not available in Indianapolis/Indiana until last year when I was able to connect "the right people" with Steve. I was glad to do it for Steve and also selfishly so that I could finally get my grubby hands on a consistent source for ESJ.

The fact of the matter is every ESJ wine I have ever had has been great. We all work for Steve and promote his wines because he makes great wines. He also does more than that, he stands behind his wines. How many times have people complained on this board of bad bottles and found a good bottle or two on their doorstep a week later? Finally, while I don't know Steve personally, he seems like a great guy, and that is the final reason we are all willling to get out ther and push his wines. "What goes around, comes around." Steve is ample proof of that old saw.

James, I have to say that I don't work for Steve, I just tell people what bargains his wines are. I do the same thing with Stone Wolf wines out of the Willamette valley in Oregon. I have recently purchased 2 cases of Stone Wolf, (1 mixed case, and one case of Linda's pinot gris) I have recently purchased 3 cases of Steve's wines. 1 case of "The Shadow", 1 case of the Peay vineyard zinfandel, a half case of his pinot grigio, and a half case of the Bone Jolly noir. I am getting ready to order another mixed case of Steve's wines which will include 4 bottles of the Bone Jolly rose, 4 bottles of his 2004 Roussanne, and 4 bottles of his 2005 Bassetti vineyard syrah. If this is work, then it is a work that I enjoy immensely.

I will look for the Stone Wolf wines Bob. Any recommendation from you is worth it's weight in gold. Who is the wine maker? Linda? I am not sure I recognize her the way I do Steve.

One of the extra reasons so many of us go the extra mile for Steve is that he is part of our little community. HE is one of "us". (Sorry Steve :? )

K, which local retailer? I've had a miserable time finding ESJ wines at D.C. area liquor stores; it would be great to find someone who brings them here. Thanks.

The Wine Specialist downtown carries them. Iron Bridge out in Columbia carries them. I think MacArthurs carries them too, but I can never find my way from PG Co. over to that side of town.

Someone on another board (was it Florida Jim?) commented once that "Steve can be trusted with grapes." I keep thinking of that line whenever I see one of his wines. Sums it all up nicely I think.
