WTN: 2005 Greco di Tufo Benito Ferrara

by FrancescoP » Wed Mar 28, 2007 1:52 pm

Long time since my previous WTN ....

2005 Greco di Tufo Benito Ferrara (13 euros)
Very rich yellow color. Very dense. Typically a south Italian white. The nose is mineral, dense. A bit of bakery and white fruit. In the background some alchol. The palate is very equilibrated, dense, mineral and fruity. The aftertaste turns quickly to a bitter almond flavor. A bit buttery. Mmmm ... it seems a wine which could do better with some waiting to get the dense fruitiness down. Not sure I will buy it again at this price.
Ciao,
Francesco

I like the slight nutty taste you can get from a good Greco, but a bitter almond aftertaste doesn't sound too promising. Have you had this producer before? I haven't, but it is generally listed as a quality producer of Greco.

I checked it out and it seems that he produces a very nice top Greco and a normally not-so-special base one. I had the base on. It is nice, but not for the price.

This wine has been met with general approval among the ultra fussy geeks that I know and try to entertain. Even Hoke Harden thought it was quite good. Now that's high praise.

I totally agree with your notes! Had one the other night and it was very good. Notes are very similar.

I do like Greco di Tufo, and 13 Euro isn't out of line -It's a bargain when exchange rate and import costs are considered over here.

I guess I am a bit spoiled, then  since we can find really nice whites for less in Europe. I like Greco (and in fact it will be served at the italian part of my wedding in few weeks). I only feel 8-10 would be a more realistic price also considering the price of the Greco Terradora, of the Vigna Cicogna Ferrara and the Cutizzi from Feudi. All three from similar (the first) to very much superior (the other two).
Still I might buy a couple more and store them till next year.
