One Degree of Separation or The Amazing Story of Wine People (Otto Nieminen)

by James Dietz » Mon Mar 26, 2007 1:26 pm

I think many of us who read this forum well know of Otto Nieminen's love for Ch. Musar. Love might not be the proper word; it's a passion that goes beyond rational at times. And I mean that in the most positive sense.

Well, imagine my surprise this past Saturday when, as I am enjoying myself at a huge tasting at a friend's house in warm S. California, in comes Wade Hoestler who hands me a bottle of 1997 Musar, a gift from Otto sent all the way from Finland!!! Wade wasn't even attending the tasting; he was on his way home to San Diego after a karate tournament with his kids and went out of his way to stop by to bring to me this very special wine.

I was blown away...Otto and I have exchanged emails a few times about wines, and he had offered to send me a great Musar. I had discouraged him, since I know he is still a graduate student and already probably spends more of his income on wine than is reasonable, and also because I didn't want to depend on our mutual friend, Wade (hence the `1 degree of separation'), to have to schlep a bottle back across the Atlantic and the entire continent and then an hour north to get it to me.

But Otto did send it and Wade did get it to me. So.. let me publicly thank both of you... to Wade, a friend I see frequently at tastings who is amazingly generous with his wines and his wild game for BBQs...and to Otto, a friend I know only because of wine boards like this that bring us together to share our joy and passion for wine.

I hope one day to meet you, Otto, and pop a few bottles and learn a bit more from your amazing palate, but even if I don't ever have that privilege, I feel as if I know you already and am proud to call you `friend.' Thank you for this wonderful gift; whenever I drink this treasured bottle, it will be a very special day.

Otto is a true wine believer, as well as a nice guy. Gotta admire a guy who lives his passions fully. Especially when he's thoughful on top of that. :)

James,

I'm glad the bottle arrived safely! I hope you enjoy it. And even if you don't like the idisyncratic style of the winery, at least you'll have tasted it! :) I did make sure that it wasn't a problem for Wade to carry it over (he assured me it wasn't - I hope he wasn't just being polite). It's a bit embarassing to have a post like this, but I am glad you appreciated the gesture!

If you open it in the near future, decant it long: 4-5 hours minimum, preferably 8. I think that it will be drinking at its best in about 10 years, if you want to wait that long. Usually I find that at age 10 Musars don't show well, but a couple recent bottles of this vintage have proved otherwise: with a proper decanting this wine is lovely now.

What a great story, but it would have been even GREATER if my buddy Jim, whom I met a while back here in Philadelphia, after receiving the wine from Wade, had hopped on a plane back to Philadelphia and opened the bottle of MUSAR with ME!!!!!!

One of these days we all will need to get together, so I can have my first MUSAR wine. Will need to learn from the OTTO-man!!!!

Cool story, and could not have happened to a better bud than JIM!

Otto - grace is not taught but innate - you are a gracious soul! One day we shall meet, listen to some good classical music, and sip MUSAR wine!

Cheers!

Ugh! Decisions, decisions! You are making it difficult, Bob! MoCool, NiagaraCool, CACool (Sta Barbara).... how is one supposed to afford all of these gatherings????? And I have my own ItaCool going on at the end of July. Just got an email from my father expecting me to visit him in Brazil, too.

Where does one start to learn MUSAR wines??????

"Where does one start to learn MUSAR wines??????"

Paulo, Mo'Cool is the granddaddy of all 'Cools so naturally it takes preference. As to the question above, there are two answers. 1 is to buy and try, the other is to take Otto to heart. Musar does ROCK!

How nice of you, Jay! I am so overdue to come up and meet you guys. Once the Easter and early May opera frenzy is over I'll come up! Let me know whenever you guys have any gatherings later in the spring.

Bawk! Bawk! Bawk!

I have zero plans for Memorial weekend - any day is good for me. If no good for the New Yorkers, maybe later in June? :)

Memorial weekend (other than Friday night) would be fine with me. I'll see if I can round some people up.

What price range would you like to keep to for restaurants? Unfortunately my longtime reliable offline venue (Inside) closed in January.

Jay,

Sunday evening would be best for me after being a vocal whore at church in the morning; then, I could just hop on the train or bus and head into "La grande mela" early afternoon.... I am game for anything, except wearing a jacket and tie for dinner....I usually go for simple Mediterranean food.... If we do a BYOB I'll probably want to snoop around a wine store or two before getting together.... Is this enough info for you?

I look forward to getting together and meeting you and whoever else you can bring together. Smallish groups (yet fun and quirky!) are more fun for me..... 8)

Paulo,

I'm going to open a thread for this on the offline forum since this one keeps scrolling off the 1st page and I never remember the title.

Sunday works for me, I'll try and get a small group together, and we can discuss everything else on the other forum.
