TN: Burgs and B.C.

Went to a friend’s place for dinner last night. He had informed me of the Burgundy he would be serving so I chose something I thought would stand up to the competition.

We started out with:

2018 M. Chapoutier Saint-Péray La Muse De RW – this brut nature Marsanne was showing a fresh nose of herbs (anise?) backed by floral undercurrents. Crisp and lighter than most Champagnes but a good alternative!

Main event (with a rabbit main course) were:

2014 Foxtrot Pinot Noir Reimer Vineyard – I could have brought another Burgundy but chose to offer what I consider to be the best B.C. pinot in my cellar, blind. It showed very well and the tasters assumed that it was a Burgundy, and a good one. Excellent fruit and an excellent pinot nose. It fooled my host completely! Long and tasty. Be aware that this wine was made when the founding family were in control - quality may vary from more recent vintages under the new management.

2017 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières – ripe but not overripe fruit in the nose, slightly lighter colour than the new world pinot, and a nice herbal/floral high toned element that showed with a bit of air. Excellent wine.

Those aged Foxtrots from your cellar have all been magnificent, Bill. Was it the vineyard that was so exceptional, the winemaker, or both? It's odd, in a sense, that no one has duplicated that magic.

The original owners had good advisors and made excellent wines - when they retired the new owners never produced (IMHO) anything as good. Sadly I only have three bottles left from the original producers.
