WTN: Some Old Ojai Syrahs....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Oct 08, 2026 3:10 pm

We tried these older Ojai Syrahs from mine & Stacey's stash:
1. Ojai Syrah Calif (14.0%) 2001 : Dark color w/ light bricking; lovely classic mature Ojai Syrah strong toasty/Ojai oak light peppery bit tired complex nose; lightly tart some spicy/blackberry/Syrah some toasty/Ojai oak bit tired/dried out some complex flavor w/ modest drying tannins; still pretty youthful & in good shape but drying out a bit on the palate; the only one to show any signs of sur-maturity but still a pleasure to drink.

More outlebird from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. I have, of course, followed Adam Tolmach's Syrahs from the very start; his '83 Estate Syrah planted on their own roots. His Estate vnyd is in a gentle swale right near a heavly-forested creek coming down ut of Ojai. Ideal territory for the glassy-winged sharpshooter. Eventually the entire vnyd was taken out by Pierce's Disease.
This set of Syrahs was pretty impressive. Adam's Syrahs have a great track record for aging. I was expecting some of these to be a bit tired. But they were all pretty healthy and none of them on their last legs. Clearly one of the masters of Syrah in Calif.

Love Ojai wines; have a few myself. And they age so well!

Btw, please join us at the new site: wldg.net. This one will go away soon. Let one of us know if you don't remember your password (most of us didn't)--we'll set up a new one for you.
