2020 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Clos de L'Echelier Cabernet Franc
Merely okay. Certainly drinkable but at this stage not particularly fetching except where it's higher acidity and lack of oak made it more attractive than the American CF also on the table.

2017 Avennia Cabernet Franc Champoux Vineyard Horse Heaven Hills
Serious vanilla oak obscures any traces of varietal typicity and adds ick factor to a malty, lactic finish that got sweeter as the evening wore on.

Sounds disappointing!

The only wine I have from them is 2016 Avennia Syrah Arnaut Boushey Vineyard, and IIRC, it was pretty good.

I visited Avennia's tasting room long ago with a friend who was a fan. Lots of star power in the room that day which must have dazzled me as I bought a mixed half case or so of 16s and 17s, of which I've disliked every bottle since for the same reason I didn't care for this one (it's the last one, thank god). I recall you asking my opinion after you got an offer from Brock, I think it was, and I mentioned the oak issue. I do remember you posting a favorable note later, which surprised me.

I put a bottle of the syrah out to try soon - will post a note.
