WTN: A Nice One from the Rheinhessen

2004 Gysler Weinheimer Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Rheinhessen (3-22-2007)

Oh, I know that I opened this one a bit early (say, five years), but I just had to have something to celebrate an upcoming three-day weekend away from my graveyard shift job. To wit:

Upon opening, just the slightest hint of sulphur. As the wine warmed, the aroma emerged as varietally correct with a bit of grapefuit bouquet. The palate revealed honey and grapefruit. There is a beautiful balance between acid and sweetness here. To my tastes, this is a Kabinett in name only.

The last two bottles of German wins I tasted were typically slim and focused Mosellaners. This beauty revealed its Rheinhessen roots in a slightly broader palate. Well worth the 14 beans I paid for it. Will likely age nicely if one can keep the mitts off of it.

Dave,

Don't age it. Gysler makes delicious, high QPR wines for early consumption. Enjoy the wine in its current state.
