WTN: 2001 A Syrah Odyssey

If there are no good, old wines, just good, old bottles, this was definitely one of the latter. Markedly youthful, with still evident dark berry fruit, it also displayed plenty of leather, smoke, and meaty aromas. The palate was more tilted towards the savory, but with excellent cushioning from the fruit. Truly a joy to drink, and a wonderful treasure from Steve's first library sale almost ten years ago!

I loved this wine when it was on shelves, and rebought at Steve's library sale (but show that as 15 years ago)
I think this is only Syrah of his I bought without a vineyard designation (other than the Shadow)
Glad to hear it's still showing well!

He did two library sales. One was 2017, when I bought this. I don’t think the other was as long as 15 years ago.

I've always loved this wine. I see I'm down to one remaining bottle. I bought some at one of the library sales, but most of what I had came either from Steve not long after release, or, IIRC, from a retailer in Chicago who brought it in for a while. I'll stand it upright in the cellar tonight; if the night feels right, maybe we'll open it two Saturdays from now, for the harvest moon.
cheers, Patchen

on CT I show some bottles purchased from Astor in 2006/2007, then from ESJ in 2011 (consumed by 2014). As ESJ was pretty available oin NYC metro I didn't usually buy direct, but possible this was a one off. See other purchases direct from ESJ of older stuff in 2017 , assume the library sale
