Friday we went to a great show (Bill Mays trio) at Jazz Forum after a quick Korean meal (with Pellegrino), I had an unexciting soft glass of Gavi at the club (no producers listed for any wine!)
Saturday oysters, sauteed scallops, miso tomato toasts with shichimi togarachi, salad
2023 Kelley Fox Freedom Hill Pinot Blanc
Floral (honeysuckle), with lemon and nectarine. Full for PB (or at least for my impressions of PB), moderate acids, tangy mineral finish. Young, tasty. B++
Tandoori style chicken, bhindi masala, rice, peppers, and salad
2001 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Kabinett #4
2001 isn’t necessarily a slam dunk in Saar like it is in Mosel (and most of Germany), but this has turned out nicely for 25 year old Kab. Doesn’t have the zip of 01 Mosel, but there’s still a good acidic core. Lime, citrus blossoms, a little slate and petrol. Light sweetness, good finish. Fully mature but not tired. B+
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
