2005 Bodegas AAlto Ribera del Duero - this tempranillo based wine is one I hadn't tried for a few years - it has escalated in price to well over $100 a bottle today, so I thought I'd pull a cork and see how it was doing. Even at two decades of age it is a big brawny wine with lots of dark fruit (blackberry and plum?) plus hints of pipe tobacco at the beginning. It still has ample tannins and excellent fruit levels - I wasn't able to choose between blackberry and plum - a big wine that is nonetheless coming together very nicely now. Long and smooth with a bit of smokiness coming in after a bit of airing, the finish was lengthy and smooth despite still having a fair bit of slowly softening tannins. Wish I had bought more! May try another bottle in a year or two.
I also have a number of other Ribera wines - Alonso del Yerro, Pesquera, Monasterio, Villacreces etc. but had been leaving them alone to mature. It is going to be hard to resist sampling some of them this winter!
