Up to John’s for a 2002 red Burg tastings. He had some nice cheese and prosciutto out
2019 Cedric Bouchard/Roses de Jeanne VV/R19 Champagne
Bready, creamy, rich but with good acidic followthrough. B+/B
Reds were in flights of 2
2002 Coche-Dury Auxey-Duresses
Wood spice, cherry and cocoa, lovely texture. B+/A-
2002 Coche-Dury Monthelie Cote de Beaune (that's how it's labeled)
Dark fruit, sweet, mature, I liked the Auxey better but I think all the others preferred this. B/B+
2002 Pavelot “les Dominodes” Savigny-les-Beaune 1er
Extracted ,burly, a bit of a rubbery note, at first I thought maybe a bit of heat damage, but consensus seemed it was the wine, packing too much extraction into a vintage that wanted to be lighter. Not my thing (and I usually like Pavelot), B-/C+
2002 Pavelot “Aux Guettes” Savigny-les-Beaune 1er
Also a little thick but I felt more balanced, with black cherry and cocoa and none of the rubbery notes of the Dominodes. I liked more than group. B
2007 Corbon Blanc de Blancs GC Champagne
Lovely, sweet pear with brioche and chalk. Elegant mousse, drinking so well. A-
2002 Bouchard Pere et Fils “Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus” Beaune 1er
This was one of mine, and I was a little worried as I have disliked other 2002 Bouchards. But I really liked- fresh red fruits, citrus zest, a hint of fruitcake spiciness. Structured but accessible, nice long tangy finish. B+
2002 Jadot ““Clos des Couchereaux” Beaune 1er
Deep dark fruit, supple tannins, a bit brooding and a tad reductive. Some disliked, I just thought in a grumpy place. B- for drinking now but I wouldn’t worry about holding
Pate de campagne, cornichons
2002 Roumier Chambolle-Musigny
I was surprised that some didn’t like this. I thought classic Roumier Chambolle. Red fruit, sandalwood, elegant and ethereal. In a good place. B+/A-
2002 Mugneret-Gibourg Gevrey-Chambertin
Young vine Ruchottes. Grippy, earth and coffee, black cherries with a little truffly note. Tasty now and I think will get better, B+ for now (others preferred to the Roumier)
2002 Domaine de l’Arlot “Clos des Forêts” Nuits St. Georges 1er
I found this heavy, disjointed, and charmless. It’s not so much that there’s something wrong here as it is there isn’t anything really right. C/C+
2002 Chevillon “Les Chaignots” Nuits St. Georges 1er
Ripe, good black cherry fruit, some espresso, maybe a little lacking in concentration on backend but enjoyable. B/B+
2002 Corbon Blanc de Blancs GC Champagne
Young, yeasty, and long, fresh pear with smoke and toast, so fresh for almost 25. A-
A great coq au vin
2002 d’Angerville “Clos des Ducs” Volnay 1er
Red and black cherry, floral, rich, but this is tight 10 years away from prime time, reminder to self- leave last bottle along. B for now, but very good potential.
2002 Coche-Dury Volnay 1er
I think others liked more than me, nothing wrong here but thought reticent and tight. For now I prefer the Coche Auxey village. B
2002 Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin
Wow, complex., aromatic and long. Red cherry, earth, grilled meats, and fallen leaves. Fresh but showing development, absolutely lovely red Burg. A-/A
And a couple non 2002 to finish the night:
Blind Red- slightly prickly acids, candied red plum, some smoke and char. I guess 1993, I think Dan gets 1985. John says a producer we had tonight and I guess Bouchard. Ok if tired wine. 1985 Bouchard Clos de la Mousse. B/B-
1972 Leroy Beaune 1er
Cherries and ashtray, hints of what was likely a nice lightweight, but best days long past, C+
Fun night! Some 2002s were great, a few showed what happens when you try to make a vintage something it's not
Last night tuna orzo with zucchini, passed on wine
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
