WTN: Meet the Metz!

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jul 16, 2026 7:56 pm

  • 2023 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling "GZ" - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (7/15/2026)
My first Zeltinger Sonnenuhr that did not come from Selbach-Oster. I wonder how Stefan got the grapes. Anyway, it has a clear Zeltingen signature (not so rich as Wehlen, but the same basic building blocks), and the just barely off-dry palate presence recalls the Selbach Ur Alte Reben bottling without that wine’s robust depth. So it’s very fine, just not quite at the level of the best bottling of the village. That’s no crime. I have several, and will keep a couple to see how they progress.

I did a double-take reading this, because I would have absolutely bet the house that you've had the JJ Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr wines a few times. (Though now that I say this, I'm having a hard time thinking of other producers who farm this site. Molitor's one, but I've found the wines generally meh, albeit with a small sample size.)

I know remember what I was trying to say and did not. First dry styled Zeltinger Sonnenuhr from anyone other than Selbach.
