We tried these two Scarpas at our recent Pig+Fig tasting:
1. Scarpa Barbaresco Vigne del Pajorie Barberis (13.20%; Btl#3040 of 3830; GrapeExpectations/Emeryville) Nizza Monferrato 1978: Med.dark color w/ light bricking; very strong smokey/old Barolo/rose petal/pungent bit floral/violets rather cedary/pencally very complex somewhat youthful/Nebb beautiful nose; lightly tart/tangy some cedary/pencilly quite floral/violets/rose petal complex flavor w/ light smooth tannins; very long/lingering very perfumed/rose petal finish w/ light gentle tannins; about as near perfection in a mature Barolo as one can expect, yet still a bit on the youthful side for a 50 yr old Barolo. $nc (BSvSG)/$17.76 (CB)

Scarpa Nebbiolo Bric da Nota DOC: Langhe (14%; CasaVinicolaScarpa/Miami/FL) NizzaMonferrato 2022: Med.color; strong floral/Nebb/rose petal/violets bit earthy lovely youthful Nebb nose; quite tart/tangy youthful/floral/violets/Nebb slight earthy bit lean/austere flavor w/ light brisk tannins; very long/lingering floral/violets/Nebb finish w/ modest brisk tannins; surprisingly good drink but should go out at least another 10 yrs. $26.00 (KK)

1. I'm a big fan of the Scarpa wines. After a visit to Piemonte in the mid-'70's, Darrel Corti discovered the Scarpa wines and was the first to import them into the USA. touted them in his newsletter & we bought a fair amount. The wines are classic Piemonte reds (they do make a Bianca, but I've never had it) but not overly agressive/tannic and usually pretty reasonably priced. After that first batch Darrell imported. they became pretty scarce. But now Scarpa is self-imported and are much more widely available. Worth trying if you see them & haven't had them before.
