WTN: Wendouree

  • 2006 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (6/6/2026)
This needed several hours in the decanter, but once it opened up it was delicious. Still youthful at age 20, with dark berry fruit, a touch of meatiness, and a eucalyptus note that rode along the top, lifting the profile of the wine. Tannins are still firm, but not harsh. Glad to have had the chance to enjoy this.

I've really liked the few Wendourees I've had, but hens teeth.

Buddy of mine who makes me look like a casual wine buyer, got involved in Australian wine auctions, and now has lots of lots of the stuff you can’t usually get here. He literally had a pallet shipped over. I got a few bottles from him in a trade.

Oh nice!

I still have a couple of bottles of various Wendourees from the late 90's. I used to go to Singapore a couple of times a year in the early 2000s and found a shop that had quite a good stock of these.

Last time I had one (1997 Shiraz Malbec Cabernet Pressings) was last year. Perhaps a bit past best, but no need to hurry in drinking it up.

Still have 2 bottles of the 1998 Shiraz Mataro. Maybe time to crack one open.

First of all it’s good to hear from you Jay. Hope all our friends in the Philippines are safe and sound.

This was the only “older” bottle I got in the trade. The other two are from 2017 and 2018. They are under screw cap!

All good in Manila, thanks. The quake was way down south.

Interesting Wendouree is now screw-capped. Maybe 30 years before those mature!
