- 2012 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/6/2026)
Just a humble luncheon wine.
While nowhere close to mature, this is a delightful drink now, as long as one subscribes to the theory of “sunk cost.” Lots of ripe tree fruit still evident, for me it evokes a drippingly ripe peach that has been spritzed with lime juice. As the wine warms from refrigerator temperature it even goes a bit more in the tropical fruit (guava?) direction. Regardless it is buttressed by fresh acidity that keeps things in line. Certainly on the sweeter side of Spätlese, it is also developing a light creaminess to the texture on the finish. Lovely wine now, sure to be even lovelier in another 10 or 15 years. No regrets opening this bottle, but I will try to be patient with my last one.
