Utah DMV Bans MERLOT

by ClarkDGigHbr » Wed Mar 21, 2007 1:33 am

Here's a brief article about a fellow with the word MERLOT on his Utah license plate. It took ten (10) years, but someone there finally realized that Merlot is an alcoholic beverage, and it is, therefore, banned from appearing on a Utah license plate.

I'd say something else sarcastic, but it's just too easy to pick on folks like this.

So this is just in Utah, eh? I wonder if there are any similar prohibitions (pun very much intended) in any other states?

It does offer a sobering lesson in reality, however: Whichever group has lots of money behind it can affect the laws in their jurisdiction and, thus, mould society to their ends. Lord knows we've seen this happen with the wholesalers, and even with the LCBO in Ontario which hasn't made life easy for our artisanal wineries.

A friend of mine who trains wine judges (he was at NiagaraCOOL '05) has the NY plate "WINEPRO".
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Glad you added the caveat Paul. In my experience most provincial liquor laws make most state laws look like open borders.

My plate is VINOUS. I wonder if it would be banned in Utah.

I think the entire country of New Zealand is banned in Utah. This is not a bad thing.
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

If only he was a Gamay drinker. He'd still be drivin' the Utah highway.
